Kohl’s Cares….Really. Truly.
If you have ever shopped at Kohl’s, you’ve probably seen the racks of stuffed animals and books near the department store’s checkout counters. At just $5 each, with signs promising proceeds to charity, the ever-changing assortment of beloved plush figures, such as Dr. Seuss characters, Snoopy or Mickey Mouse, along with children’s classic books and quality cookbooks are a great deal for shoppers.
But our community’s children may get the best deal of all from the Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids program In 2013, a whopping $103,445was given to The Hurley Foundation, on behalf of Hurley Children’s Hospital, from the Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids program. The donations were collected from five Kohl’s stores in Hurley Children’s Hospital region.
Since 2006, Kohl’s and its shoppers have raised more than $914,552 for Hurley. The money has funded multiple children’s health initiatives, including rehabilitation, asthma, and childhood injury prevention. The Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids program is a response to rising child obesity rates in America. A third of American child are obese – and Flint has the 10th highest rate of childhood obesity in the nation.
The Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids initiative is designed to help children – and entire families – eat healthier and stay active. Students at seven local grade schools enjoyed
The Radio Disney D-Tour Show and took home back packs filled with easy-to-make healthy snack recipes, a water bottle, activity sheets and other information for their parents. The grant also sponsored two free Sundays at Flint Children’s Museum.
Kohl’s commitment to Hurley is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys in which 100 percent of net profit benefits children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like the one with Hurley.
So the next time you are thinking about buying a throwaway birthday card or get-well gift, consider spending that money on Kohl’s Cares merchandise instead
