We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America. Here are some things you may not know about our nation’s independence.

  1. Declaration of Independence was actually approved by congress on July 2nd, 1776.  The final wording was approved on July 4th . The first printed copies posted across cities read “In Congress, July 4, 1776” as a result, the date “4th of July”  became the date everyone referred to.
  2. The Declaration of Independence was a letter written to King George.
  3. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence.
  4. Three presidents died on July 4th John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. One president was born on the 4th, Calvin Coolidge.
  5. The first 4th of July celebration at the white house occurred in 1804.
  6. Independence Day became an official holiday in 1870.
